Pick Up Litter

Start or Join a Cleanup Group in Your Area

Why not help clean up your community while doing something good for the earth? Many municipalities use the incarcerated population pick up litter on the side of the road, but as budget cuts continually increase, the availability of people to pick up trash decreases. Regardless, cleaning up trash shouldn't be left only to the incarcerated; it should be a responsibility for anyone who is capable.

How can you help? First, check MeetUp to see if there are any cleanup groups in your area. If there aren't, or if the group doesn't seem to be active, start a group! Identify areas that are especially full of litter, such as parks, walking trails, and playgrounds. Then, schedule a time to meet up and pick up trash.

Tips:

  • Check with the property owner to make sure you are permitted to pick up trash there.

  • Do not trespass on private land without permission.

  • Never go alone -- always have at least one other person with you.

  • Wear long pants and long sleeves.

  • Wear a safety vest to protect you.

  • Be aware of hunting season -- you do not want to be in the woods when hunters are active.

  • Find out where you can dispose of the trash/recycle the recyclable materials.

What You Will Need:

If you live in an area that trades recyclables for cash, you can monetize this hobby, or donate any proceeds to charity.
